Two hours along Lough Leane
You make your own way to the riding stables on the Killorglin road, two kilometres west of Killarney town, and the morning starts with boots, a helmet and being matched to a horse. Then you ride into the park.
The route runs along Lough Leane with the mountains standing behind it, through open ground and woodland that no road reaches. Two hours at a horse’s pace covers a good deal of the park’s western side, and it covers the parts of it that walkers and carriages do not get to.
The rating is 4.9 across 89 riders. It is the best-rated active option here, and the feedback splits neatly: the horses and the guides draw praise from everyone, and the one recurring wish is for more commentary about the ground you are crossing.
You do not need to have ridden before
Beginners are a large share of the people on this ride and the stables are set up for it. Guides walk you through mounting, holding the reins and stopping before you leave the yard, and the horses on the beginner string know the route better than any rider does.
Experienced riders are catered for too — tell the stables when you book and they will put you on something with more in it. What the ride does not do is teach you to canter across the park on your first morning.
How the stables match you to a horse
When you book, you are asked for your height, your weight and your riding experience: beginner, intermediate, or experienced. That is not paperwork — it is how they decide which of the string you ride, and it is the single reason the safety record and the ratings look the way they do.
The weight limit is 20 stone, or about 127 kg, and every rider needs to be able to mount with reasonable ease.
Two hours or three
The same stables run a three-hour version over broadly the same ground. Honestly, for most people the two-hour ride is the better buy: it costs $68 less, it covers the park’s best stretches, and it carries far more traveller feedback behind it.
Take the three-hour ride if you ride regularly and two hours in the saddle is not enough of a day.
This ride suits you if
You want to be active and cover real ground, you have ridden a little or not at all, or you want the best chance of seeing the red deer. Two hours in the saddle takes you through park country that no road and no carriage reaches, and the guides genuinely work with beginners.
Book something else if
You are travelling with a child under eight, you have back or heart problems, you are pregnant, or you are over the 20 stone / 127 kg weight limit — the stables cannot take you, and that rule is what keeps everyone safe. The same country, seated and open to any age, is the private horse and carriage tour.

Finding the stables on the Killorglin road
The riding stables sit 1.5 miles — about two kilometres — west of Killarney town on the Ring of Kerry and Dingle road toward Killorglin. They are on the right-hand side, behind a large stone entrance leading to a red brick stable building, and they are clearly signposted.
There is no pickup from town, so allow for a taxi or a short drive. Parking is at the stables.
Know before you go
- Arrive 30 minutes early. The ride leaves on time and latecomers are not refunded — build the buffer in.
- Have your height, weight and experience ready. It is how they pick your horse.
- Minimum age is eight. Younger children cannot ride; take a carriage tour instead.
- Weight limit 20 stone / 127 kg, and you need to mount with reasonable ease.
- Bring water and a snack. Food and drink are not included and two hours is longer than it sounds.
- It rides in the rain. Waterproofs over your layers, and free cancellation to 24 hours if the forecast is genuinely against you.

Questions before you book
Is the three-hour ride better value?
For most people, no. It covers broadly the same ground for $68 more and has far less traveller feedback behind it. Take it if you ride regularly and want a longer day; otherwise these two hours are the better buy.
Can I ride if I have never been on a horse?
Yes, and plenty of the riders on this trip have not. The guides run you through the basics in the yard first and the beginner horses know the route. Say you are a beginner when you book so the matching works.
What if I am travelling with a child under eight?
They cannot ride — eight is the minimum age and it is firm. The private horse and carriage tour covers similar country seated, takes any age and costs a quarter as much.
Do I need my own riding gear?
No. Helmet and boots are provided along with the horse and the guide. Wear long trousers and bring a waterproof layer.
