You meet at Deenagh Lodge, just inside the park gates opposite St Mary’s Cathedral, and climb into a covered horse-drawn carriage. From there the hour runs west and south through Knockreer and along the shore of Lough Leane, on drives laid out when this was a private demesne and never opened to cars.
The pace is the point. At a walking horse’s speed you see the ground the way it was designed to be seen — the parkland opening out, the Reeks on the skyline, the water appearing between the oaks. It is about a kilometre and a half of scenery per ten minutes, and none of it is available through a windscreen.

The route, stop by stop
- Deenagh Lodge, minute 0. Meet the jarvey and the horse at the gate; free parking at the cathedral car park across the road.
- Knockreer parkland, minutes 5–20. Open ground with the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks straight ahead — the classic Killarney view, and where the red deer graze early.
- Lough Leane shore, minutes 20–40. The drive runs down to the water, with Innisfallen Island offshore.
- Ross Castle, minutes 40–50. Ten minutes at the tower house. The interior is a separate Office of Public Works ticket and is not part of this fare.
- Back to Deenagh Lodge, minute 60. The tour ends where it started.
This hour suits you if
You want the park without walking six kilometres of it, you are travelling with small children or grandparents, or you have one free hour in Killarney and want to spend it well. It works in rain, it works with a stroller, and a short-notice booking is usually no problem.
Book something else if
You want to be inside Ross Castle rather than beside it — the jaunting car run out to Ross Castle allows twenty minutes there instead of ten. If you want to cover real distance and be active, take the two-hour horseback ride instead.

Meeting at Deenagh Lodge
The pickup point is right across from St Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney, at the entrance to the park. There is free parking in the cathedral car park, and the park entrance is directly across the road from it. If you are driving, arrive fifteen minutes early so parking does not eat into your hour.
From the town centre it is about a ten-minute walk. The tour ends back at the same point, so you can leave the car where it is.
Know before you go
- Arrive 15 minutes early if driving. The cathedral car park is free but fills in summer.
- Ross Castle inside is extra. Budget €5 an adult and remember it is guided-only, capped at fifteen, and closes at 17:00.
- Infants sit on laps. Strollers are fine and travel with you.
- It runs in rain. The carriage is covered and blankets are provided — bring a coat and go.
- Not wheelchair accessible. For step-free access use the surfaced Muckross lakeside paths, which are free.

Can I get inside Ross Castle on this tour?
Not on this fare — the stop is ten minutes outside the tower house. The interior is a separate Office of Public Works ticket at €5, guided only and capped at fifteen people. If going inside matters, the jaunting car run to Ross Castle allows twenty minutes there instead.
Is it really private?
Yes. The carriage carries your group and nobody else, whatever size you book for. That is unusual at this price and it is the main reason this departure rates as highly as it does.
What if it rains?
The tour runs. The carriage is covered and blankets are provided, and Killarney rain rarely lasts a whole hour. If the forecast turns properly bad you can cancel free up to 24 hours ahead.
How does this compare to the two-hour horseback ride?
Different days out. This is an hour, seated, suitable for any age, and it costs about a quarter as much. The horseback ride puts you in the saddle for two hours along the Lough Leane shore and needs a minimum age of eight.
